Media Covered Twitter A Bit More Than Facebook In 2011

[![][1]][2][Twitter][3] edged out Facebook for the crown of most media coverage for a social network in 2011, according to HighBeam Research.

[HighBeam][4] found that Twitter accounted for nearly 50 percent of social network mentions in the media, with Facebook close behind, at 45 percent.

On a monthly basis, the only months when Facebook topped Twitter were February, when the larger social network rolled out a [new layout for pages][5], and April, when [deals][6] expanded.

Sister blog [Inside Facebook][7] [][8]pointed out that February was also the month of the massive protests in [Egypt][9], while April brought news about Facebook's legal headaches from the [Winklevoss twins][10] and [Paul Ceglia][11].

Other social networks barely registered, with [Google Plus][12] not included due to its June debut. The share of coverage for these others was:

* LinkedIn, 3.33 percent
* Myspace,1.3 percent
* Foursquare, .71 percent
