The Ville: Prepare for Halloween with new avatar costumes

While Halloween may be the next major holiday, it's still a few months away, with makes us wonder why Zynga has jumped the gun, releasing a new series of avatar costumes in [the Ville][2] far before Halloween is even on most players' radar. Whatever the reason, just a few costumes are now available for both male and female avatars, but you'll need to pay Ville Cash for the ability to show off your avatar's multiple personalities.
For instance, female avatars can dress as either a Pirate or a pink Bunny for 33 and 44 Ville Cash each, respectively. Meanwhile, male avatars can also dress as pirates, with a Gorilla costume (at a price tag of 44 Ville Cash) being the other option available there.
Since there are only a couple of costumes for each gender as of this writing, it does make us suspect that a full slew of costumes will be released once Halloween actually does roll around, but if you simply can't wait that long to dress your avatar up as a fun character, then by all means head into the store now while these costumes are fresh on your mind.

CityVille Games Escapades: Everything you need to know
![][1] Now that we've had a bit of time to plan for the launch of the [CityVille][2] Games, CityVille's version of the Olympic Games, we'll finally get a chance to actually "compete" in some games, via the introduction of a new Escapades menu that separates sports and medals, allowing you to keep track of your progress in all of them.
There are five sports taking part in the CityVille Games Escapades, including track and field, swimming and gymnastics, and each is separated into Bronze, Silver and Gold medal levels. You'll need to ask your friends for materials to earn the various medals, so this looks to be a challenging event overall (since you'll be timed). For instance, to reach the first level of the Track and Field medal ceremony, you'll need to collect five each of Track Shoes, Jerseys, Vaulting Poles, Discus discs and Javelins.
You can only compete in a single event a single time, but even if you don't reach the Gold medal level in a specific sport, you'll still receive rewards. To begin, you'll only have a couple of days to finish the Track and Field event, with Swimming being the second sport that will unlock "soon." If you don't want to wait, you can also unlock additional sports with City Cash.
Either way, there are goals to complete associated with these sports as well, giving you plenty to work on in your city over the next few days. Stay tuned for more on this new feature, as we'll let you know when additional CityVille Games features launch in the game!

FarmVille Harmony Garden: Everything you need to know
![][1] With the launch of [Bloom Gardens][2] in [FarmVille][3], players have become dependent on a constant street of Flower Food to grow those new blooms into fully grown flowers. While asking your friends for Flower Food technically works, wouldn't it be nice if we could earn a free supply of Flower Food once per day? With the launch of the Harmony Garden in FarmVille, you can now do just that.
The Harmony Garden comes with five different levels, each of which requires different amounts of building materials to finish. These items (Zen, Yellow Bamboo and Stone Lanterns) are earned by asking your friends to send them to you, or by purchasing them outright with Farm Cash. You can also claim some free materials that are being posted by your friends as they too complete this Harmony Garden in their own games.
As you upgrade the Harmony Garden, each level will require more building materials than the last, and the item itself will change in appearance and complexity. You'll also be able to collect more individual units of Flower Food from Harmony Gardens that have been upgraded fully.
It's likely that we'll be able to place Harmony Gardens on multiple farms in order to earn the most Flower Food possible each and every day. While you don't have to build any Harmony Gardens if you simply choose not to, you can now start building at least one of your own by logging into your farms. Good luck finishing one off!

The Harmony Garden comes with five different levels, each of which requires different amounts of building materials to finish. These items (Zen, Yellow Bamboo and Stone Lanterns) are earned by asking your friends to send them to you, or by purchasing them outright with Farm Cash. You can also claim some free materials that are being posted by your friends as they too complete this Harmony Garden in their own games.
As you upgrade the Harmony Garden, each level will require more building materials than the last, and the item itself will change in appearance and complexity. You'll also be able to collect more individual units of Flower Food from Harmony Gardens that have been upgraded fully.
It's likely that we'll be able to place Harmony Gardens on multiple farms in order to earn the most Flower Food possible each and every day. While you don't have to build any Harmony Gardens if you simply choose not to, you can now start building at least one of your own by logging into your farms. Good luck finishing one off!

![][1] The upcoming fourth expansion pack for mega-successful MMO [World of Warcraft][2] (WoW), _Mists of Pandaria_, might not be so "hardcore" after all. With a [Pokemon][3]-esque pet battling system and now a [FarmVille][4] (or [Harvest Moon][5]) style cropping system to boot, developer [Blizzard][6] is incorporating features found in all sorts of mainstream and casual game.
Moves like these are almost certainly in hope of roping in as many of those kinds of players as possible. A series of in-game quests titled "The Tills" will introduce players to the farming feature in WoW, which is both terribly similar and a far cry from what [Zynga][8] offers in FarmVille. For one, you'll plant and harvest crops just like you do in FarmVille. However, your fellow WoW players will not be able to visit your personal farm, which would have seemed like a no-brainer to us.

Top 10 Free iOS and Android Games - July 2012
![][1] Remember when we said to "get outside already?" Yeah ... sorry about that--get the heck back indoors. It's insanely, disgustingly hot out there, but the beauty of mobile games is that you can play them _wherever_. You already knew that, right? So, let's just get to the top free games on iOS and Android for this month (as of this writing).

1. [Where's My Perry?][2]
Disney's attempt at having lightning strike twice seems to be working with this Phineas and Ferb-ified rendition of Where's My Water. It's essentially the same game as its predecessor save for some artwork changes, but the masses don't seem to think that's a bad thing.
2. [Catapult King][3]
This could be seen as a 3D take on Angry Birds--just swap out the slingshot and birds for a catapult and giant boulders. Of course, we're sure there's more to Chillingo's physics puzzler (pictured below), but we're just telling it how we see it. And boy, does it look awesome.
3. [Zombie Run HD][4]
A blatant rip on Imangi Studios' Temple Run, this gem by RetroStyle Games is quite shameless in its craft. Players run away from angry poachers as a zombie, replete with the same controls and graphic style. But hey, "remember: zombies! They are cool." RetroStyle's words, not ours.

Think of the most explosive biking simulation game you've ever played, and you're close to grasping what Dogbyte Games has created (pictured above). With incredible graphics and what the developer claims are realistic physics, it looks like you'll be in for a destructively good time.

'Nuff said. But in all honesty, [War Commander][2] creator [Kixeye][3] has taken quite the hilarious (and lewd) approach to roping in more work warriors in its mission to create "games for gamers by gamers": the viral recruitment video. Kixeye takes this golden opportunity to poke fun at [Zynga][4], [EA][5] and what looks to be Kingdoms of Camelot maker [Kabam][6]. The results are a downright hoot.
While the head of EA as an old bag is goofy, personifying Zynga CEO Mark Pincus as a bad-mouthed little boy is enough to get a chuckle out of you. One of the more amusing recruitment videos to hit YouTube, Kixeye claims to imitate no one, and seems to succeed in doing so with this gem being the first recruitment video to feature a dildo. No joke: Watch closely at 2:35. It should go without saying **this is NSFW**.

Here in England the mood is cautiously optimistic, which is as close as we get to the rampant jubilation most other countries would be enjoying when faced with the prospect of hosting the greatest show on earth. With Friday's Olympic opening ceremony a mere handful of days away now, we're very close to putting our cynicism aside for at least a whole week, and not even the presence of a licensed cash-in can ruin our mood.
[London 2012: Official Mobile Game][2] starts off with a rather impressive character creation system that lets you build your very own Mii-like athlete before you head towards the events list. Each one of these has three different modes available, so you can either get some training in to improve your stats, take part in competitive events, or work on a series of event challenges to enhance your prestige.
[The archery event is by far the best of the bunch.][3]
If you want to compete, you're going to need stamina which recharges every ten minutes. Extra events are unlocked using the gold currency that can either be earned through competitive gameplay, or just purchased from the store. Attribute-enhancing apparel can also be purchased with gold to give you a completely legal, and definitely not prohibited, advantage on the track.
It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's ever played a licensed, big-budget sporting event game that the events themselves are something of a mixed bag: some are genuinely enjoyable, others clearly needed a second round of polish before being sent off to the starting blocks.

First things first, the tilt controls are absolutely dreadful, and you would be well advised to switch to screen presses for all events. On many occasions, tilting my device forward to clear a hurdle did in fact flip my screen image vertically, making for a rather ignominious end to my representation of Queen and country.
Running events are characterized by their requirement for you to mash the touchscreen almost to breaking point by repeatedly hammering on spots to the left and right of the screen. Simple and fun, but slightly worrying if you're anything like like me and you constantly obsess over the state of your screen.

As well as this frantic button-mashing, the hurdles event requires a button press (you switched from tilt controls, right?) which, when well-timed, will send you leaping over the obstacle. Timing mini-games accompany the pole vault and triple jump events.
The 100m freestyle and butterfly swimming events require some frantic finger-swiping down the screen to get your swimmer moving at a brisk pace (you will not want to do this in public), and there are again timed mini-games for when you need to make a zippy turn at the end of a length.

While these games are basic but at least good fun, the delayed steering of the kayak event will likely bring a decidedly unpatriotic tear to your eye as you approach a target around a blind corner and change direction a mere handful of seconds after tapping the directional button. Agonizing.
The double trap shooting event is by far and away the most disagreeable of the lot, with one of the worst implementations of a virtual joystick we've ever seen (and, as you can imagine, we've seen a few). It sticks, it becomes rigid. It forgets that you're holding it altogether, and then it assumes a mind of its own. You will never become an Olympic champion at this event.

Things fortunately pick up by the time you participate in archery, which features the sort of wobbly reticule and wind speed action you'll know from any number of sporting games of years gone by. Still, to the developer's credit, it's done very well, and feels the most genuinely competitive.
So, there we go. Like the Olympics itself there are events to get excited about and others that make you scratch your head and wonder what you're missing. Given that the better events are mixed in with a rather neat progression system that takes you all the way from regional wannabe to Olympic idol, you may get enough reward from your time to make downloading this game worthwhile. Just don't expect gold.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS) Review

The 3DS version of [Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games][2] had a strike against it from the beginning, simply because it comes with 50 plus activities better suited to a motion controller like the Wii remote. People want to get off their butts and mimic using a bow to fire an arrow over messing with a touch screen and face buttons.

At the same time, we don't hate Sega's creation. On the contrary, we feel it provides just enough charm and addictiveness to warrant a purchase, or at the very least, a rental.
Here's the thing: you'll love some events and hate others, which is fine. We don't particularly dig blowing into the mic to push sailboats across the ocean, but really enjoy fencing, which is easy to get the hang of. Judo is a big waste of time. You just hit buttons before your opponent (been there, done that, no need to play it ever again), but Table Tennis kept us busy longer than expected.
In the end, everyone will have his or her favorites. That said, the game has eleven categories, including Aquatics, Contact Sports (think boxing), Gymnastics and Cycling. You're free to play games one at a time, or create a medley that Sega lets you share with others via Wi-Fi.
There's even a story mode that centers around Bowser and Dr. Eggman using a fog machine to sabotage the Olympics, but the basic plot left us feeling empty. Most cut scenes involve settling differences by defeating the competition across a variety of events, and the developers carry this theme throughout the entire experience, but hey, at least the cut scenes gave us something to watch.
On top of that, Mario & Sonic comes with multiplayer, but it's local only, though you're free to square off against friends using one copy of the game.
Craving a bigger challenge? Online leaderboards definitely help the game's appeal.

So does the outstanding presentation. The epic soundtrack captures the importance of the Olympic games, while the bright and colorful visuals show what 3DS is capable of, with Sega and Nintendo mascots battling for medals while hundreds of animated fans fill the arenas. Even better, the glasses free 3D is easy on the eyeballs.
The biggest knock against this game, though, is longevity. With mini games lasting mere seconds, it doesn't take long to see everything Mario & Sonic has to offer. At the end of the day, you can only play Beach Volleyball for so long.
On that note, we had a good time with this one, especially with so many famous faces (Peach, Metal Sonic, Tails, Wario) to choose from, but there's a definitely lack of depth that may derail your potential enjoyment, and Sega made a bad decision by restricting characters to certain events.
In the end, not a gold medal, but a stately bronze.

The Dictator: Wadiyan Games (iPad) Review

We've come to expect a mobile tie-in for upcoming films, and [The Dictator: Wadiyan Games][2] is no exception given Sacha Baron Cohen's (Ali G, Bruno etc) soon-to-be-released comedy The Dictator. Paying another nod to this summer's London Olympics, Wadiyan Games sees our president fighting unfairly across a series of sporting events.
There are two events provided with the free download: running and boxing. In the former, President Aladeen runs through three separate heats of sprints. Being the most powerful man in the land, he's of course armed with a pistol with which to take down his competitors. Later rounds have him armed with a machine-gun while riding one of those ridiculous Segway machines, or firing rockets from a gold-plated SUV.

Similarly, the boxing starts off with a knuckle-duster-wielding Aladeen facing off against a rather vulnerable opponent. As circles appear on your victim, you need to tap the screen to score points. Once the first heat's over, the president adopts the safety of a robotic mech-suit while taking swipes at his opponent with metallic bear claws. Ouch.
The style of the game is rather South Park-esque with its crude animations, and the sound relies on various soundbites from the upcoming film. As you might imagine, these can become a little wearisome once you've heard them a few times, but they're fun for the first blast through the game.

The initial offering is free and enjoyable enough in itself, although we'll be surprised if people feel motivated enough to stump up the rather optimistic $0.99 required for _each_ of the two other sports offered up in the in-game store. These consist of swimming and fencing events, and we've no doubt they'll follow the rather thin gameplay setup of the free content.

Very much more of an advertorial than an outright game, it's hard to muster up a great deal of enthusiasm for The Dictator, even if it's fun for a few fleeting moments. Die-hard fans of Cohen's films will no doubt get a bigger thrill out of this gaming version of his latest comedy, but for everyone else it's a bit of a throwaway experience.
