FarmVille Winter Holiday Crops: Gum Drop and Golden Poinsettia

![][2]Two limited edition crops have launched in [FarmVille][1]'s marketplace, both of which are in the current [Winter Holiday theme][3]. One is more traditional, offering us a golden version of the classic Christmas flower the Poinsettia (appropriately, the crop is called Golden Poinsettia) while the other is more whimsical, coming in the form of Gum Drop candies.

Both of these crops are available to plant across farms (that is, they aren't limited to just the [Winter Wonderland farm][4]), but only the Golden Poinsettia is free to plant, as it costs coins. A single square of Golden Poinsettia costs 20 coins to plant and requires 16 hours to grow. You'll gain 4 XP for each square you plant and tend, and you'll gain 215 coins for each flower at harvest. The first star of mastery for this one comes at just 275 harvests.

As for the Gum Drops, this is a Farm Cash crop which can be unlocked for 10 Farm Cash. For that price, you'll receive a seven day permit to plant and harvest as many Gum Drops as you'd like. If you decide to purchase the crop permit, you'll earn 2 XP for each square grown and will earn 150 coins for each plot when you harvest these candies. This crop can also be mastered, with the first star coming after 400 harvests. If you do purchase this permit, feel free to plant extra squares on multiple farms so that you'll have the best chance of mastering it in the short week-long window you're given with this permit.

You'll have about a month to plant the Golden Poinsettias - 27 days, to be exact - while the Gum Drop permit will be available to purchase for the next 28 days. If you're hoping to receive Farm Cash as a Christmas present, that still gives you a few days to rush and master these Gum Drops, so keep that in mind. If you're worried about more limited edition crops launching within that time frame, however, you might want to purchase the permit now, only to be paid back later.
**
What do you think of these two limited edition Winter Holiday crops? Will you pay 10 Farm Cash for the Gum Drop permit, or does its exclusive mastery sign not hold a draw for you? Sound off in the comments.**

FarmVille Winter Holiday Items: Holiday Cookie Tree, Wreath Chicken and more

![][2]With tonight's [FarmVille][1] update, we see a slew of new items being released in the current Winter Holiday limited edition item theme. While these items would look great on your new [Winter Wonderland farm][3], if you're waiting for free rides before heading to the game's new snow-covered farm, you can still purchase these items on your other farms, giving each of them a touch of the holiday spirit. Here's a look at what's available (hint: get your Farm Cash ready).
**
Trees**

Holiday Cookie Tree - 6 Farm Cash
Big Holiday Cookie Tree - 12 Farm Cash
Snowflake II Tree - 8 Farm Cash
Big Snowflake II Tree - 14 Farm Cash

If it still needs to be said, remember that if you're a tree collector, you'll only need to purchase the first two trees in each pair, as the "big" versions of each can be earned for free from Mystery Seedlings grown either in your own Orchards, or claimed from friends.

**Animals**

Snowflake Mini Horse - 24 Farm Cash
Holiday Light Cow - 20 Farm Cash
Holiday Bell Ram - 16 Farm Cash
Wreath Chicken - 18 Farm Cash
Mini Candycane Pony - 26 Farm Cash
Black Caribou - 2.5 million coins

![][4]

Unfortunately, if you're an animal collector, you're in for a pretty expensive time with this release. Even the Black Caribou costs a pretty extreme amount of coins, if you don't save them up routinely.

**Buildings**

Holiday Clock Shop - 15 Farm Cash

![][5]

This building is a fairly small one, with just a few natural elements sitting around its base (a tree and some flowers). It's still a cute building, even though it's not very large, and at least its lower price tag matches its size.

**Decorations**

Holiday Forest - 4 Farm Cash
Caroling Gnomes - 12 Farm Cash
Holiday Birdhouse - 50,000 coins

![][6]

If you purchase nine of the items in this week's release (including all four trees), you'll also be given a free Cider Waterfall. Although, after all of the Farm Cash you've spent to earn it, it wouldn't exactly be free anymore... Either way, these items will be available in the game's store for the next two weeks. Remember, you can purchase them across all four farms, but if you want one item on each farm, you will have to purchase duplicates separately.

**What do you think of this newest batch of Winter Holiday items? Will you purchase them just for your Home Farm, or will you use them to further decorate your new Winter Wonderland farm? Sound off in the comments.**

FarmVille: Pick up a pair of Unwither Rings for home and Lighthouse Cove

![][2]Even though [Winter Wonderland][3] is now available in [FarmVille][1] (for users willing to [pay $10 to get in][4], that is), we've yet to see an Unwither Ring released on this new, fourth farm. Instead, we've seen two Unwither Rings launch in the store. The first, the regular blue Unwither Ring is available only on your Home Farm. The other is the purple Unwither Ring that's locked to your Lighthouse Cove.

Both of these rings, regardless of color of location cost 250 Farm Cash. There hasn't been a change in their prices, but if you've yet to pick one up for either of these farms, and would like to rest easy, knowing that your crops (on those specific farms) will never wither again, you can shell out the $45 or more that it will cost you in Farm Cash.

As a suggestion, these rings will be available for the next five days, so if I were you, I'd wait until a Farm Cash promotion (say, a free-gift-with-purchase promotion) launched within the game. At least that way, you'd receive two items for that incredibly high Farm Cash price. Just don't wait too long, or you might miss out on these rings, and be forced to wait until [Zynga][5] re-releases them yet again.

**Do you have an Unwither Ring on either your home or Lighthouse Cove farm? Do you think the permanent boost is worth such a high price? Sound off in the comments.**

FarmVille: Santa's coming soon - have you been naughty?

![][2]

While [Winter Wonderland][3] might offer [FarmVille][1] players more than enough content to last them through the month of December, the Christmas holiday and beyond, we'll apparently be receiving a visit from the big man in red himself: Santa! Santa looks to be coming with a new feature, if we can take a new gameplay loading screen seriously.

While it's no secret that Santa will indeed make an appearance in the game - "Guess Who's Coming to FarmVille?" pretty much guarantees it, it's what role Santa will play in the game that remains to be revealed. We're asked if we've been naughty of nice, with that text presented above a pile of presents. Could this mean that Santa will be part of an in-game gift exchange? Or, will we be able to complete a set of goals to prove to Santa how nice we've been, so that we'll be given more presents? At the very least, it looks like we'll likely end up with a Winter-themed collection event in the game, (most likely) bringing some limited edition goodies with it.

The possibilities here are endless, but we'll make sure to stay on top of things to make sure you're the first to know when Santa himself shows up on our farms.

**Are you excited that Santa will be making an appearance in FarmVille? What sort of feature do you think Santa will be involved in? Speculate with us in the comments!**

CityVille: Deck the halls with Winter and Christmas themed items

![][2]December is right around the corner (as in, just a couple of hours away!), so what better way to bring in the new month than by turning your city in [CityVille][1] to a winter playground?! Only a few items have been released in the store's Winter theme thus far, but if you want to get a head-start on your holiday decorating, here's what's now available to purchase.

**Holiday Radio Station** (Community Building)

* Costs: 60 City Cash
* Allows: Raises max population by 2,250

**
Mistletoe Manor** (Home)

* Costs: 45 City Cash
* Population: 1,100 - 2,180
* Rent: 149 coins every two hours

**Redwood Tree **(Decoration)

* Costs: 3 City Cash
* Payout Bonus: 3% to surrounding homes and businesses; extra 3% to Winter items

**Gingerbread Man** (Decoration)

* Costs: 3 City Cash
* Payout Bonus: 3% to surrounding homes and businesses; extra 3% to Winter items

**Holiday Bakery** (Business)

* Costs: 9,000 coins
* Requires: 245 Goods
* Supplies 1,376 coins

**McCallister House** (Home)

* Costs: 10,000 coins
* Population: 170 - 320
* Rent: 93 coins every hour

**
Candy Side Walk**

* Costs: 25 coins per piece

The McCallister house has to be one of the neatest buildings I've seen released in CityVille, whether in a holiday theme or not, as it makes a subtle reference to the classic holiday movie franchise Home Alone. All things considered, the base of this home is rather small, when compared to what the home looks like in the movies, but at least that will help you better manage your space in your town (if land space is still a problem for you).

All of these items are marked as being limited edition in the store, but since December hasn't even technically started, giving us a few weeks before the big day (Christmas day, of course), I wouldn't expect these items to leave the store anytime soon. What I would expect, however, is for more items in the Winter / Christmas theme to launch between now and the end of the year, and you can be sure we'll let you know what those items are once they launch.

**Are you excited to see Christmas / Winter items start to roll out in CityVille? What other sorts of movie-inspired Christmas items would you like to see released? Sound off in the comments.**

Pioneer Trail Australian Animal Collection: Get them while they last!

![][2]The past few [limited edition collections][3] must have gone over very well in [Pioneer Trail][1], as now we've seen one released with an original theme (that is, one not associated [with a holiday][3]). This newest collection features limited edition Australian animals, that can only be purchased and well... collected for a limited time. There are five animals for sale, along with a bonus prize if you purchase all five. Here's the rundown:

* Wallaby - 20 Horseshoes
* Brolga Crane - 25 Horseshoes
* Cassowary - 30 Horseshoes
* Emu - 35 Horseshoes
* Kangaroo - 40 Horseshoes

Altogether, if you purchase just one of each animal, you're looking at a cost of 150 Horseshoes. You'll need to purchase at least one of each animal to receive the free bonus prize: a Koala Bear. While this collection is still rolling out to users, once it does reach your Homestead, you'll have around 11 days to make up your mind as to which of the five to purchase. With Horseshoes constantly on sale, you'll at least be able to stock up on premium currency for cheaper than the "normal" price (then again, if it's always on sale, isn't the sale price now the "normal" price?). Just make sure to shop sooner, rather than later, so that you don't miss out.

'Tis the season to play The Sims Social's Cozy Winter Retreat update

![The Sims Social Cozy Retreat Week][2]

With December quickly approaching--like, in less than six hours--it's time to whip out the Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa decorations. Of course, it's no different for the Sims of Little Haven, as EA and Playfish have pushed a new theme to The Sims Social: Cozy Winter Retreat. Your Sims are headed to a comfy-looking ski resort complete with a steamy sauna and jacuzzi.

But that's not the only things steamy about this content update--more on that later. Starting today, players will have access to a slew of brand new Christmas decorations through the in-game shop including a number of interactive decorations. How does a buildable Christmas Trees sound? You'll get to decorate their very own holiday firs with "tinsel, baubles and other stuff to make your tree look cooler and cooler," according to EA. Better yet, Christmas Trees double as interactive and skill items, and will be able to be used for other items in the future.

Players can also pick up, like we said, yet another new jacuzzi, the Winter Chalet Hot Tub. Unfortunately, we're told that there's no WooHoo to be had in this hot tub, but players can take a deeper dip than usual. Finally players will likely get to make their own Christmas cookies with the Holiday Toasting Set. Of course, a brand new quest awaits players, making a nod to a Christmas classic.

The Top 10 Free iOS and Android Games -- November 2011

![Free][2]As Sean Bean-err--Ned Stark would say: Winter is coming. And it's time to kick back on the couch and play some more games to make sure the 10 pounds you took on over Thanksgiving break stays there for the chilly months. The amount of gaming goodness to be enjoyed out there on the cheap is enormous and growing, and we're not just talking Facebook. Free-to-play games (as in, more than mere demos) are becoming more and more attractive to game creators.

Of course, they all have payment structures similar to Facebook and social games, but frequent readers should be used to that by now. With that, we've decided to highlight the best of the best, the cream of the crop each month as it stands on the final day of said month. Here are the top 10 free iOS and Android games (as of this writing) for November 2011:

## Top 10 Free iOS Games

1. [Amazing Breaker Free][3]
Dekovir Inc. brings an interesting puzzler to the table with a simple goal: Using a few bombs as possible, destroy at least 90 percent of the ice in each sculpture. It sounds easy, but what until those sculptures break off in tiny shards. The game, complete with Retina Display graphics, features several unique bomb types including Ghost Bombs and Helicopter Bombs.

![Pictorial][4]2. [Angry Chickens][5]
Seriously? Games like this don't even deserve more than this sentence, but we're game: The only thing more uninspired in this game than swapping the word "Birds" for "Chickens" is that there isn't even a type of four-legged farm animal in it.

3. [Office Jerk][6]
Fluik's iconic game returns to the top of the charts after an update this month. Now, you can throw Thanksgiving turkeys at the jerk for a limited time, as well as a host of other food items.

4. [Monster Magic][7]
Come on, people: Doodle Jump has been there and done that. At any rate, players can send 12 different monsters leaping up endless flights of floating platforms (sound familiar?) with the help of numerous power-ups.

5. [Original Gangstaz Rock][8]
If Mafia Wars isn't ... gangsta' enough for you, then Addmired's take might scratch that itch for you. Hey, here's something this game has and Mafia Wars doesn't: Your Momma' jokes--an interesting proposition, we guess.

6. [Pictorial][9]
Sergey Vasiliev has created (pictured upper right) what looks to be one of the more interesting takes on connect the dots this writer has seen. Players must guess the shapes presented in clusters of stars in the night sky as a means of training players' spatial awareness.

7. [Dream Zoo][10]
Zynga's first zoo-themed game released this month clocks in on the charts at a lower place than we'd expect. That's especially considering, based on an early look at the game, how darn cute it is. Check out [our full preview right here][11].

8. [Doodle Devil F2P][12]
JoyBits has released the spiritual successor to its hit Doodle God. As you might have guessed from the title, the game has players do the exact opposite as before: destroy the universe using just basic elements ... like an apple and a human.

![NFL Pro 2012][13]

9. [NFL Pro 2012][14]
This answer to Madden by [Gameloft][15] takes the NFL license and runs with it. In fact, this looks like it plays a whole lot like Madden does on the iPhone. Though, Gameloft does claim to have used motion capture to get those players moves just right.

10. [MyTown 2][16]
Booyah's sequel to its location-based city builder was just updated with a [slew of social features][17]. Given that [our in-depth preview of the game][18] rested on the lack of said social features, this could make MyTown 2 worth a try.

## Top 10 Free Android Games

1. [Angry Birds][19]
Again, because everything to say about Rovio's money printer has been said ad infinitum, let's highlight some Angry Birds news, shall we? Did you hear that [Rovio][20] allegedly [turned down an offer][21] from [Zynga][22] worth $2.25 billion? Crazy town!

2. [Words With Friends][23]
Let's try that same approach with this Zynga Mobile game, because let's face it: The game beat Scrabble to the punch on mobile. Did you hear that Words with Friends launched with the [Amazon Kindle Fire][24]?

3. [Angry Birds Rio][25]
Hey, the [Smuggler's Plane content update][26] just released to this version of the game. So we'd say it's worth checking out. Though, you'll likely have to pay up to access it--but why haven't you done that already?

![Turkey Blast: Reloaded][27]

4. [Turkey Blast: Reloaded][28]
Ezone.com brings a Thanksgiving-themed game to the table for those that are still munching on leftovers. And who could resist that theme song? Just ... check out the game's page on the Android Market.

5. [Angry Birds Seasons][29]
Ooh, here's a juicy one: It looks like the next Christmas-themed Angry Birds update will be called "[Wreck The Halls][30]." You can probably expect it some time in December.

6. [Fruit Ninja Free][31]
Fruit appears, you slice it and squishy/slice noises ensue. Rinse, repeat and your three-hour flight to Seattle just turned into an hour-long joyride. [Halfbrick][32], how will you ever strike gold like this again?

7. [Drag Racing][33]
Pretty much a staple to the top 10 list for Android at this point, Creative Mobile's car racer and customizer simply seems to deliver. Android-owning gear heads: This is the mobile game for you.

8. [Shoot Bubble Deluxe][34]
A newcomer to the top 10 list, but not a newcomer to games across the board, City Games's latest is a futuristic take on the bubble-bursting sub genre. At least there are a few gameplay modes and a global leaderboard, right?

![Defender][35]

9. [Defender][36]
This may be just another tower defense game, but boy does it look good. Droidhen's take on the "defend your castle from monsters" sub genre is a refreshingly handsome one at the very least, with numerous flashy power ups.

10. [3D Bowling][37]
Italy Games's approach to everyone's least favorite sport returns to the top 10 list. And for good reason: The game looks stunning (for a bowling game), has detailed stat tracking and packs online leaderboards for the competitive types.

Secure.Me Promises Cleaner, Safer Facebook Profiles

![][1]The [reputation-management][2] field gains another player in Secure.me, which launched in beta form today by way of Germany.

[][3]This free service that allows users to protect their privacy and reputation on Facebook, as well as to cover their children's online use.

A total of 10 languages are now supported. The options open to [Secure.me][4] users include:

* **Monitor questionable content**: Secure.me uses language-recognition technology to discover [critical topics or posts][5] on users' Facebook profiles, or in their friends networks.
* **Monitor all activity**: Secure.me displays all messages and comments that its users have posted on their own or their friends' profiles, as well as providing an overview of likes, new friends, events, and check-ins.
* **Monitor users' personal profiles**: Secure.me lets you see all comments and interactions from friends and apps that appear in their profiles.
* **Find photos**: Secure.me uses [facial recognition][6] to find photos of users or their children, even when they are not tagged.
* **Control privacy settings**: Secure.me analyzes sensitive personal information in users' profiles and recommends steps they should take to optimize their privacy.
* **Scan links**: Secure.me informs users of any [unsafe links][7] on their profiles or friend networks, including viruses and malware.

Secure.me is already established in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland under the name Ruflotse, and its Founder, Christian Sigl, said in an email:

Our life has long merged with the online world. We use online services, social networks, and mobile apps so actively that it's hard to keep track of every bit of personal information about us that is visible to others on the Internet -- whether we put it there ourselves or it was placed there by friends, acquaintances, or even complete strangers. As a user, you're on your own when it comes to protecting your privacy. Law doesn't take effect as quickly as the market is developing. Privacy settings for individual services don't help in the long run, because they change in pace with the market. Users can only control their own privacy if they can independently monitor it. Parents have to do this for their children. And that's why we created Secure.me.

We have been setting the agenda for online reputation management in the German-speaking markets since 2007. In doing so, we have noticed that the need for parents to monitor and ensure their children's safety on the Internet and social network sites has risen substantially -- especially in recent months. In response to this need, we decided to take on the task of providing parents around the world with a daily overview of their children's online activities -- with the help of Secure.me. We know that children and parents often don't like being Facebook friends with each other. And we also know that parents don't have the time to continuously monitor Facebook. We developed Secure.me to solve this problem.

Readers, do you use any reputation management or security software on Facebook, and if so, which one(s)?

Facebook Extends Maximum Status Update 12-Fold

![][1]Facebook has extended the maximum length of [status updates][2] to 60,000 characters, 12 times what it used to be.

Perhaps this move intends to offset the site's recently announced plan to end support of RSS in the Notes application.

The change might offer longer thoughts better visibility in the news feed than the old Notes had.  However, longer statuses don't jibe with the ticker, which tends to clip posts after a period mark.

However, we've already noticed a couple of items in the ticker running four or five lines in length, a line or two longer than what we thought the maximum was for the scrolling feed.

We've previously written that the average Facebook user sees only one out of every ten status updates, but that phenomenon doesn't mean that a post of ten to 12 times the length would get more visibility.

However, if length of post were to become part of the criteria in the GraphRank algorithm for placement of posts in the news feed, then longer status updates would become more visible.

A telling point of comparison appears in the infographic that we reproduced from the [Facebook + Journalists page][3]: You could post the contents of an average novel in just nine status updates.

Food Force on Facebook: It's FarmVille for do-gooders

![food force facebook game][3]

Two of the biggest reasons people play social games are distraction and relaxation, but a new Facebook game hopes to add another reason -- to do good in real life.

Food Force, a game created by Konami and the World Food Programme, puts players at the head of a virtual humanitarian aid agency with the goal of getting rid of hunger in different parts of the world. To complete this monumental task, players will need to grow crops a la FarmVille, turn them into expendable goods and ship them off to countries in need. As per most social games, friends are required to get the job done, and you'll be able to visit neighbors' agencies for bonuses.

The game itself isn't exactly groundbreaking (and a tad confusing), but the main selling point is that you can use Facebook Credits to buy power-ups in the in-game store and the proceeds go to the World Food Programme school meal initiative (which helps feed 20 million children every year). So, basically, if you use Facebook Credits to buy a tractor or some kind of fertilizer, you'll help feed a certain number of children. A 'real-life impact" tracker in the game lets you know how many kids you've helped.

![food force real world impact][4]

It's worth noting that this is the second debut for Food Force. The first was back in 2005 when Konami released another game with the same name, in which players executed emergency operations on a fictional island. The new Food Force on Facebook game is a little broader in scope than the original and takes advantage of Facebook's social features.

"Through this title, we hope that people in Japan and across the globe not only strengthen their understanding of WFP's work but also support their worldwide efforts against hunger while enjoying an accessible social game," says Konami Senior Vice President Kazuhiko Uehara.

We've seen this trend of doing good in other social games, like the popular [FarmVille's Sweet Seeds for Haiti promotions][5], but this is one of the few games entirely devoted to building awareness and raising money for a cause. While the idea behind the game is, well, admirable, one can't help but wonder -- is the game going to get enough people to play to really make a difference? An existing game like FarmVille, with 20-some-odd millions of engaged players, might be a better vehicle for organizations that want to make a difference.

Facebook Is Testing Messenger For Windows

[![][1]][2]

Facebook quietly rolled out [Messenger][3] for Windows, announcing the debut of the trial app -- which allows users to exchange Facebook messages without being logged into the social network -- on its help center.

[Messenger for Windows][4] is not yet available for downloading by the general public, as Facebook said in its help center:

We're testing out a first version of the app with a small group of people. During this trial period, we plan on rolling out changes to the app and expect outages and periods of instability as we make improvements.

Note: Messenger for Windows will automatically install updates.

This messaging application requires Windows 7.

The app automatically syncs with Facebook, and it allows users to chat and message with their Facebook friends, and see ticker updates and notifications.

Facebook said the app currently supports chatting and messaging only with individual friends, and not group chat or video calling.

The social network added that users' privacy settings are carried over.

Readers: Will you install Messenger for Windows when it becomes available to the general public?

Everybody, start your engines: Zynga will go public on Dec. 16 [Report]

![Zynga IPO][2]

Did you remember your enormous salt shaker? Good, because [Reuters reports][3] that [Zynga][4], everybody's favorite social game maker, will make its stock market debut on Dec. 16. According to Reuters, the [CityVille][5] creator will look to raise $900 million, a hair down from the almost unanimously-reported $1 billion that will bring its valuation to $14 billion.

But hey, that's still right on par with the most valuable games company in the West, [Activision Blizzard][6]. (Of course, Reuters cites "a source involved in the process.") Zynga will reportedly ask between $8 and $10 a share on the Nasdaq under the ticker ZNGA--a fairly noticeable one, no? However, Reuters does confirm that [Zynga will start its roadshow][7] next week to spur investor interest.

That is, if investors can look past the recent torrent of reports and quips that don't paint the prettiest picture of the company behind [FarmVille][8]. The New York Times allegedly revealed that Angry Birds maker [Rovio][9] turned down a [$2.25 billion offer][10] from the company, while a recent [Wall Street Journal report][11] seems to have exposed quite the stock scandal within Zynga. Worse yet, players are apparently [leaving in droves][12]. It's time for Zynga to shift into third gear: That $900 million is atop one giant hill.

**Would you ever invest in Zynga at such a price? Do you think the company could at least become the _second_ most valuable games company in the US? Sound off in the comments. [Add Comment.][13]**

UK Facebook users could soon gamble their earnings away (for real)

![Online gambling][2]As in, gamble their real cash away with the chance of actually winning money in return. [According to eGaming Review (eGR)][3] [paywall link], Facebook is talking with a number of UK to possibly open up its platform to real-money gambling. And the change could happen as soon as the first quarter in 2012. We can almost hear the sobs of British men in the gutter already from bad [Zynga Poker][4] matches.

eGR reports, citing anonymous sources (of course), that Facebook is considering providing eight licenses to UK operators looking to get into a market that developers are already trying to crack. According to the website, Facebook is already staffing up in preparation for the initiative. This type of thing is likely years away from happening in the US, where online gambling is, for all intents and purposes, illegal.

The UK-based online gambling companies in question reportedly include Gamesys and 888 Holdings. However, more details on how age gates, payment solutions or revenue splits between Facebook and the companies would work aren't available. The website speculates that Facebook could be using the UK as a testbed for similar efforts in other countries.

The news comes as particularly striking considering the number of mock-casino and [betting games][5] that have hit Facebook in recent months from [DoubleDown Casino][6] to Yazino's games and [Bet Tycoon][7], to name a few. In fact, [Yazino CEO Hussein Chahine thinks][8] that the social gaming market would be vastly different today if not for how the US handled online gambling prior to the rise of the genre. Well, it looks like those floodgates are about to open--at least elsewhere in the world.

Facebook Video Watching Ranks 2nd Only To Google

![][1]Facebook [ranks second][2] only to Google for video watching in the U.S.

Google here really means YouTube, the leading video site owned by the search giant, and the rankings reflect viewership in October as measured by [comScore Video Metrix][3].

Over 58.8 million Americans watched video on Facebook during October, compared to an overall U.S. audience of 184 million together watching a record 42.6 billion videos.

Google visitors accounted for half of those videos, or 20.9 billion, yet the total number of unique viewers amounted to 161 million.

So, roughly half of all online video watching in the U.S. takes place among roughly one third of [Facebook][4]'s American users.

Facebook has steadily climbed up the monthly ranking of online video watching over the past year, ranking sixth as recently as February.

Continuing upgrades of the video [sharing option][5]s on Facebook contribute to the rise, along with the large size of the site's membership, which now hovers around the 800 million mark.

Is Spotify Trying To Become The Facebook Of Music?

![][1]Spotify is [incorporating][2] the Facebook philosophy of using free, open-source applications in an effort to become a music platform in its own right.

[Evolver.fm][3] reported that Spotify Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek said in a blog entry that the apps will be coded in HTML5, and they will be part of the Spotify app, so users won't be required to install any other software.

He said that developers can build apps via a JavaScript application programming interface API.

Ek added that users can access these apps whether or not they are Spotify subscribers, according to Evolver.fm, and he said that for now, developer partners do not share in revenue.

He also said many of the apps were in response to user requests, and it made more sense to outsource those features to third-party developers.

_Rolling Stone_ co-founder Jann Wenner also appeared at today's press conference in New York, where Ek described the music magazine's version of the Spotify App as including "editorial, concert tickets, lyrics, and many, many more experiences … just the perfect companion to read about the stuff you want to hear as you hear it."

Wenner said the online magazine's version of the app will soon add playlists.

[Spotify Apps][4] have already been created by Last.fm, We Are Hunted, _Rolling Stone_, _The Guardian_, Pitchfork, Songkick, TuneWiki, Dagbladet, Soundrop, Top10, _Billboard_, Fuse, Gaffa, ShareMyPlaylists, Tunigo, and MoodAgent.

The TuneWiki app displays the lyrics to songs users are listening to, and the Songkick app offers information on whether artists currently being played are performing anywhere in users' areas, including ticket purchasing, if applicable.

Readers, how are you listening to music these days, and how have your habits changed with technological advancements?

7 Killer Apps For Building Custom Tabs On Facebook

With such a great variety of Facebook apps out there, it's become even harder to find a suitable application that matches your business or personal goals.

Here's a look at eight popular tools for adding miniature applications, or tabs, to pages on the social network.

# Static HTML![][1]

## Installation

1. Go to the [Static FBML][2] application.
2. Click the blue box labeled "Add Static HTML to a Page"
3. Choose the page the app to be added to and click "Add Static HTML: iframe tabs"
4. Once done, you will be taken to your Fan Page. Find new tab marked with a star, and click on it
5. Input content into fan and non-fan view using regular text or custom HTML (preferred)

## Pros

- Recognizes HTML/CSS/Java Script and highlights the tags
- It's good for pre-made coded templates

## Cons

- Doesn't host images, styles, media files (you'll need to host supplementary files at your place)
- Requires HTML/CSS knowledge

## Pricing

Free!

## Summary

It took me few minutes to play around with the app and understand how it works. This is a nice freebie as long as you are pro in HTML/CSS or have a pre-made template. Is useless for a beginner.
![][3]

# TabFusion

## Installation

1. Go to [TabFusion][4]'s page and  and click "Enter"
2. On the upper right, click "Sign in with Facebook", Allow the app to communicate with your Facebook account
3. You're on Dashboard: Click "Design" then "Website"
4. Choose tab icon, then go to TabMaker
5. Click "Enter TabMaker" and start editing my page
6. And now trouble begins… I'm lost and cannot publish my app. Need help!

## Pros

I had no chance to see any. Share your experiences in the comments section, please.

## Cons

- Process is too long and complicated
- Lack of editing tools and features

## Pricing

Basic apps are free

## Summary

Though the basic apps (such as website, music, etc) are free, the installation process os quite unfriendly. The price actually explains the quality. I couldn't finish mine app.

# TabSite

![][5]

## Installation

1. Go to the  [TabSite][6] page and hit "Connect with Facebook"
2. Connect an app to Facebook by clicking Allow
3. Complete the registration form
4. Select Facebook Page and Level
5. Choose the name of the tab from the list and hit "Create Tab"
6. Click "Okay" to access page builder interface and start building the page

## Pros

- Great number of add-ons such as forms, widgets
- Drag and drop management
- WYSIWYG text editor and custom HTML area

## Cons

- Takes six steps to get to actual page builder
- Complicated and a bit unfriendly interface for a beginner
- Most features require Pro level

## Pricing

**Free**: One page with branding
**Bronze**: $5 monthly, or $50 yearly
**Silver**: $10 monthly or $100 yearly
**Gold**: $15 monthly or $150 yearly

## Summary

There are plenty of widgets available, but most  are available with paid accounts only. The tab builder interface is equipped with a ruler grid, image library, pus layers and templates management. Unlike the usual click-to-upload feature, these guys a implemented drag-to-upload which made the editing process a bit busy and uncomfortable.

# WelcomeTab

![][7]

## Installation

1. Go to the [WelcomeTab][8] page and hit "Activate this App"
2. Connect SocialAppsHQ to your Facebook account
3. Complete the registration form
4. Click "Connect with Facebook" and Allow the actual Welcome tab app to be connected
5. Choose a plan. Tried clicking "Free trial" few times with no luck? Basic plan costs $0.99.
6. Choose a page to connect app to. Again, this is where it keeps asking about payment, even if I choose Free

I guess it's not my day, cause I've got no credit card with me to try this app. So, based on this two-minute overview, I can say the following.

## Pros

I had no chance to test all handy features declared by developers. No free trial? I wasn't prepared to pay (even 99 cents) for a try.

## Cons

- Invalid free trial
- Takes 6 steps (at least) to get to actual builder
- The actual app page on Facebook looks unprofessional with 40% of the page being cut off

## Pricing

**Free trial** (we're not completely sure it's working properly, however)
**Starter**: 99 cents a month
**Standard**: $9.99 monthly
**Vertical**: $29.99 monthly
**White label**: $99.99 monthly

## Summary

The application developer has stuffed this app with Like Gate support, real-time analytics, css control, WYSIWYG editor, image hosting and an option to share content and invite friends.

# IWipa

![][9]

## Installation

1. Go to [iWipa][10]'s page on Facebook and click "Install"
2. Choose a page and connect an app (via normal Facebook app connection interface)
3. Click on new tab on your fan page and hit "Activate"
4. You'll be taken to your account dashboard on Iwipa to start editing
5.  Edit and publish

## Pros

- WYSIWYG text editor and custom HTML area
- Fan-gating
- Google Analytics
- Appearance management

## Cons

- Too busy and overloaded admin interface
- Broken links happen sometimes
- Most of the options require payments
- Uniform layout for all the pages

## Pricing

**Free level**: pretty basic
**Pro level**: $9.97/mo & $99,97/yr

## Summary

I lost myself few times before I built a simple page. I wish this interface was more friendly and could differentiate primary and secondary options to a user. As is, the app is too overloaded and busy for a regular user. Paying a free will give you quite good tool to build a tab for Facebook page. I wish the developers could fix the interface and make it more intuitive and friendly.

# Lujure

![][11]

## Installation

1. Go to [Lujure][12]'s official site and register for a free trial
2. Allow the app to connect to your Facebook account by clicking standard Allow box
3. Choose a page to add the app to & input the title for new tab
4. Edit the content via editor
5. Hit publish (that's where you will have connect app to page by clicking "Add Lujure to my page"

## Pros

- Very fast interface
- Free plan offers decent number of features
- Drag-and-drop management
- Community support forum

## Cons

- Building process is not completely intuitive (some actions require you to hit "Done" or "OK" twice)
- Too expensive in case you want to use its advanced features
- Requires basic graphic application knowledge to customize the images

## Pricing

**Free**: includes or one page with Lujure branding
**Consultant**: $30 per month
**Business**: $300 per month

## Summary

Lujure is really great for beginners, and users with medium HTML knowledge. The paid seem a bit expensive in comparison to other apps. Despite its price, Lujure is a great alternative to build custom iframe tab for your Facebook page. Each box is edited in a separate popup block, and you can drag and drop the boxes. Measuring rulers help organize the design, which is cool. The "like gate" and layout templates are useful, and the installation process is smooth and painless.

# PageModo

## Installation

![][13]

1. Go to [PageModo][14]'s website and click "Start Now"
2. Click "allow" to enable connection between app and your Facebook account
3. Select the page to add new app to
4. You're on the dashboard: choose the theme for your tab
5. Start building the page via editor, and publish once done

## Pros

- Intuitive interface
- A number of tab icons to choose from
- Variety of themes
- WYSIWYG text editor
- Ability to customize your tab label name

## Cons

- Doesn't have HTML editor
- Free plan requires to like the PageModo fan page

## Pricing

**Free**: One page with PageModo branding
**Basic**: $6.25 monthly
**Pro**: $13.25 monthly
**Agency**: $33.25/mo

## Summary

Pretty nice, useful and quick tool to build a custom tab. But to my opinion, for lack of an option to input custom HTML and JavaScript code this application might be useless for people with intermediate and advanced level of coding knowledge.

# Conclusion

Hopefully you now have an idea about available do-it-yourself tools for building custom iFrame tabs on Facebook. Just know that none of this applications will be able to help you if you don't have a basic sense of style and balance. Using pre-made layouts and templates will streamline your work, but knowing how to format images, code in HTML and JavaScript and set up cascading style sheets will enable you to do more with the tab applications.
